Everyone is pressed for time. Whether it’s the new year and you’re trying to make goals for the next 12 months or it’s the end of the year and you’re trying to keep up with holiday sales, one thing is clear: it doesn’t seem like you’ll catch a break anytime soon.

If that’s the case, then when are you supposed to work on your website? How are you supposed to find the time to figure out ways to improve your on-site SEO?

That’s the goal of Zoek’s 5-Minute SEO School. We want to teach you some simple SEO tricks and strategies that you can do on your own in just a short amount of time. So, without further delay, here are 3 ways to improve your on-site SEO in less than an hour!

Optimize Alt Text

It seems many people forget that images can be optimized, just like text can. It works a little differently, but once you know the trick, it’s something you can implement without much trouble every time you add an image to your site.

To optimize an image, open up your file description from either the media center (such as in Wordpress or Wix) or right click on the image and look for ways you can edit it. From there, you should be able to find an “alt text” option. Instead of naming your image something like “happyface” and leaving the alt text blank, you could name the image “womansmiling” and type an alt text description of “happy Caucasian woman smiling with book”. A great place to look for examples of alt text descriptions is a stock photo website. They are masters at this. Try Adobe Stock, Pexels, or Unsplash.

Clean Up Unnecessary Plugins, Apps, and Widgets

Do you use a platform such as Wordpress or Wix? Do you have a bunch of addons (such as plugins, apps, or widgets) that you have added to your dashboard? These types of addons can be very useful. They range from video embedding technology to back-end development and special forms to run polls or contests. When used efficiently, they’re wonderful and add depth to your website. However, when a webmaster installs a ton of apps and only uses a fraction of them, that can cause an issue.

You see, these addons slow down the load speed of your website. In fact, your page should load in three seconds or less; ideally, under two seconds is the sweet spot. Search engines don’t like slow sites, and people are VERY fast to click back and “bounce” away from your site, which the search engines ALSO take to be a negative sign.

So, to keep your load time down, get rid of unnecessary apps you aren’t using. It’s an easy way to improve your SEO without much effort!

Update Your Content

This might not seem like a “quick” SEO tip, but it can be! Search engines look for frequently updated sites with relevant content. To keep your site (and your content) fresh, simply add a blog. You can update once a week or however often you choose—it’s up to you and your schedule. By adding new updates frequently, you’re telling the search engines that your site is active and relevant.

We hope you’ve found these tips useful. You can easily implement these changes in a short time. Even if you only choose one of these strategies, you should still see results. Good luck!
